Foreward

There are very few businesses in this world whose sole purpose is to put smiles on people’s faces. Amusement parks are one of those amazing industries.

For centuries, these fun spots have served as an escape from the worries of everyday life. However, the parks of today would be far from the family fun palaces they are if it were not for the unique breed of pioneers who literally created this industry.

It takes a special person to succeed in the amusement park industry: Someone willing to spend 12 hours or more a day in the scorching summer heat dealing with the often difficult general public; someone willing to risk their livelihood on their new innovation, usually an untested concept; and someone who has the foresight to identify the next great industry trend.

The people profiled in this book all embody those special characteristics and in their own way each one contributed to the success that the amusement park industry enjoys today. Tim O’Brien has selected an excellent group of individuals to launch this series and he has highlighted not only the special qualities of the pioneering men themselves, but has provided us with an illustrious and mostly heretofore undocumented history of the parks, products and companies these pioneers created.

It is a pleasure to be a part of this book. As someone who has researched the amusement park industry for three decades, I have developed a special admiration for the unique personalities who make the amusement business special. Tim shares my passion for this industry and his long hours of research and writing, along with his keen observation of the industry should give you a special appreciation for these pioneers. Enjoy!
